AOG High School Fiji Tour Auckland City

The AOG School Tour Group outside the Auckland War Memorial Musuem

The Fiji Community Association of Auckland last month welcomed the Assemblies of God High School of Fiji on their trip in to Auckland.
With sixteen students and five teachers, the group arrived on Saturday 16th of August and were greeted at the airport by members of our community and church groups.
With one of the main goals of their visit being to help the students gain exposure, the group was accompanied by reps from our community and church volunteers.
The group visited the Auckland War Memorial Museum amongst other places to further their understanding of New Zealand as part of the schools Geography curriculum.
Travelling through the Waikato district on a day trip, the students were able to see and assess the land forms as well as visit farm areas and the city of Hamilton.
Leaving Auckland to return back home on the 28th of August, the trip proved quite an experience for the students.
Coming from different backgrounds and being senior students it was very fitting that in their last week the group were able to visit a number of the tertiary institutions within Auckland. Organised by the Fiji Community Association of Auckland, the group visited the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and Ellipse Institute
The visits to the various tertiary institutions proved pivotal in providing the students with an opportunity to meet and talk to the right people about future studies here.
The school was farewelled by a dinner put on by Mt Roskill First Fijian AOG, Faith Fijian, Emmanuel Victory, Calvary Chapel, and Auckland family residents.

ISAIA VAKARURU - A word from our President...
In the words of the wisest man that ever lived ‘There is a time for everything’. We are again at a time to choose our leaders to lead us into the year 2009. We acknowledge the developments through the efforts of our members and executives and I can fairly say that the year has been exciting in the diversity and quality of the activities that our Association has been involved in.
The financial position of our Association is strong with the potential of reaching the $500k mark in the not too distant future when the lease on our land at Mangere is formalized. The range of assistance we provide to the individuals of both new and old migrants to NZ from the office is indeed satisfying while being a privilege and an honor.
Coming to the end of our term, we recognize the influx of opportunities that have opened up to our Association as we implement our strategic plan, and we commend the young people and youths who are beginning to take interest in our activities. Whilst being conscious of the need to grow our assets and their value for obvious reasons, I pray that we will not lose sight of the fact that our greatest asset are our members whom we exist to serve and help grow in to a better quality of life.

Projects & Progress
In early June this year the Fiji Community Association of Auckland Incorporated submitted a proposal for the ASB Community Trust’s Maori and Pasifika Education Initiative.
ASB Trust set funds towards projects that will directly help the underachievement of Maori and Pasifika children in the education system. With their aim being ‘to make sure young people can fully engage in New Zealand society and to enable them to develop the capacity and skills to manage and grow their economic base’, the Trust called for expressions of interest from those who likewise share their passion for the advancement of Maori and Pasifika children. The Trust received nearly 300 Expressions of Interest for this Initiative.
Last month the Association (FCAAI) were pleased to receive correspondence from the Trust notifying them that they had been selected as one of thirty-seven applicants that have been shortlisted and invited in to the second stage of the selection process. The Association is now one of a few other language resource applicants that have been put together to discuss the possibility of working together on a project that will benefit early childhood resource development.
Currently we have representatives from our Association attending the meetings where details of proposals and projects are being put together with other language resource applicants and refined for implementation.
Headed by our president and assisted by Mr Levani Rabo our executive team is working on the project.
